Art Therapy Groups & Workshops

“The power of the arts and art therapy to help people connect with one another and understand themselves and each other more completely is unparalleled.”- Juliet King

 Art Therapy Group.

Just like individual art therapy sessions, group art therapy is a form of psychotherapy facilitating the exploration of feelings through creative self-expression.
To provide a safe, supportive and therapeutic group session, numbers are restricted providing a small group experience. Larger groups are possible when facilitated by two art therapists.

The group structure is very similar to an individual art therapy session, with a check in at the start, finding out what is on the mind of all participants, then onto some art making. After art making we sit together and everyone shares their art work with the group, saying as much or as little as you want about what feelings you experienced during the process of art making. The other group members will then share their thoughts about the image/art work. Connecting to the art allows for increased communication, engagement and understanding. Supporting each other through sharing art work can provide a context where people can approach one another and talk about the issues represented in the art work.

Art Therapy is based on the idea that the creative process of art making is healing and life enhancing. Throughout the history of art therapy there have been two focuses-

1) The practice of art therapy is a discipline based on art and psychology, art psychotherapy is a modality that supports a person to explore their emotions and thoughts and is used as a clinical therapeutic practice.

2) The second focus is ‘art as therapy’; that the process involved in art making is fundamentally healing, life enhancing, and thereby ultimately therapeutic.

At Scribbly Bark Art Therapy and Counselling-
Community art groups and workshops are based on ‘art as therapy’, aimed at providing a supportive, life enhancing space, where people can come together, connect, and make art. ‘Art as therapy’ groups can reduce isolation and increase social connection, thereby improving mental health. It isn’t an art class. Group sizes are generally up to 10 people.

Corporate Groups/Team Building

Art making can be a fun way for your team to express themselves, release stress, and work together. Research shows creativity can improve overall health and brain function, improving both spontaneous and deliberate processing modes in cognitive function.
